This page provides a timeline of events on the Severn Valley Railway during 1986.
Passenger numbers for the year totalled 185,053.[1]
March 1986[edit | edit source]
8 days of filming of the TV series The Singing Detective took place using LMS Jinty (4)7383.[2]
BR LMR 'local exhibiton loco' Class 40 D213 Andania and an exhibition coach were on static display at Kidderminster.[3]
On 25 March Bridgnorth District Council issued a Notice ordering the SVR to stop riveting boilers in the open air, the SVR not having a boiler shop at that time.[4]
April 1986[edit | edit source]
The Spring Steam Gala was held on 19-20 April.
June 1986[edit | edit source]
Two Didcot locomotives visited for four weeks including the Summer Steam Gala on 21-22 June:
- 5051 Drysllwyn Castle (later renamed Earl Bathurst): GWR Collett 4073 Castle class 4-6-0 (making a return visit).
- 6998 Burton Agnes Hall: GWR Hawksworth 6959 Modified Hall class 4-6-0 (first time visitor)
45690 Leander and 75069 made a reciprocal visit to Didcot.
July 1986[edit | edit source]
Work began on building the new Kidderminster signal box at the start of the month.[5]
Friday 4 July saw the unveiling of two plaques commemorating the official opening of Kidderminster Town Station.[6] The same day saw City of Truro leave the SVR bound for the NRM at York. During her time at the SVR she had worked a number of main line events as well as services on the SVR.

Sunday 6 July saw 'SVR 21', a celebration to mark the 21st anniversary of the founding meeting at the Cooper's Arms. Many of those who took part had been at that first meeting, including Keith Beddoes whose idea it was.[7]
On 11 July a Crown Court Hearing in Shrewsbury upheld the SVR's appeal against the Notice issued by Bridgnorth District Council, allowong work to resume on repairing and maintaining boilers at Bridgnorth in the open air.[8] However plans for a boiler shop had been drawn up and deposited seeking outline planning permission, and attempts were being made to resume consultations with the Council.[9]
August 1986[edit | edit source]
Filming of scenes for the Granada TV movie A Wreath of Roses took place at Arley and Highley using locomotives 47383 (numbered as 5721), former SVR resident 5690 Leander and 75069. For the film, a footbridge connecting Arley's platforms 1 and 2 was built as a prop. This can be seen in the photograph taken on 5 August reproduced below, originaly published in SVR News 82. D1062 Western Courier had replaced a failed 4930 Hagley Hall (diesels were not used for passenger services on 'normal' working days at that time.

September 1986[edit | edit source]
The Autumn Enthusiasts Weekend on 21-22 September saw two LMS Crimson Lake Jubilees in service. The visiting locomotives were
- 45593 Kolhapur [LMS 5593]: LMS Stanier Jubilee 6P class 4-6-0 (From Tyseley)
- 58926 [LNWR 1054]: LNWR Webb 0-6-2T Coal Tank (From Dinting)
The service in which 48773 was dedicated to the memory of British military railway personnel took place at Highley on Sunday 27 September. Invited guests included the footplate crew when the locomotive was derailed by a camel in the Persian desert in 1942.[10]
October 1986[edit | edit source]
The Western Diesel Weekend was held on the weekend of 11-12 October. Sunday included the second Kidderminster Rail / Road Rally organised by The Erlestoke Manor Fund.
The line was closed on 20 October 1986 for construction of the Bewdley Bypass Bridge. Construction was completed and the line reopened in time for the Santa Special services in December.
November 1986[edit | edit source]
Following a second Notice from the District Council and appeal by the SVR, an agreement was reached to restrict boiler work to 9-5 on weekdays for the next two years, subject to planning permission for the erection of a boiler shop. The first planning application was promptly refused by the District Council.[11]
December 1986[edit | edit source]
Ticket sales for the Christmas services totalled 34,753 Santa tickets and 2,616 Mince Pie tickets.[1]
