Carriages
The SVRSevern Valley Railway has over 80 carriages, dating from pre-grouping to BRBritish Rail or British Railways Mk1s of the early 1960s, with well over half of them in operational use.
The carriages are normally operated in six matching sets, or rakes, although it is not uncommon to see more than one livery in a train as individual carriages are temporarily withdrawn for repair or maintenance and others are substituted or added to increase passenger capacity.
The four sets in regular timetabled use are;
- Set C, British Rail Mark 1s in Crimson & Cream[1].
- Set M, British Rail Mark 1s in Maroon.
- Set L, LMSLondon Midland & Scottish Railway (And BRBritish Rail or British Railways built to LMSLondon Midland & Scottish Railway design) in Maroon.
- Set N, LNERLondon & North Eastern Railway & GNRGreat Northern Railway Teak
Other sets and carriages in operational use are;
- Set GW2, GWRGreat Western Railway, both pre & post grouping, as well as BRBritish Rail or British Railways MK1 buffet, in Chocolate & Cream. Normally only used during busy periods.
- Set S, 'The Severn Valley Limited' diner set in GWRGreat Western Railway Chocolate & Cream. Pre book only, not shown on the timetable.
- Set VV, 'The Severn Valley Venturer' two carriages attached to a service train operating from Bridgnorth. Comprised of BRBritish Rail or British Railways MK1 kitchen car 1682 and LMSLondon Midland & Scottish Railway first open 7511.
- Observation saloons, two carriages which can be privately chartered and attached to a regular train.
- Set 'Toplights' comprising spare serviceable GWRGreat Western Railway vehicles not included in GW2. Very occasional use for filming and other work.
Several other carriages are in use as volunteer accommodation or as storage.
This page includes full size carriages adapted for use as Post Office Sorting Vans (also known as Travelling Post Offices or TPOs) and General Utility Vans (GUVs). Other goods vans and brake vans are listed under Goods Wagons.
