The Stanier Moguls were one of the first classes designed by Stanier after his arrival on the LMS, the first loco of the single production lot emerging from Crewe in October 1933.


Large prairie tanks were a common sight on the GWR, with more than 300 built between 1903 and 1949 to the same basic design. The locomotives were designed to haul semi-fast and suburban passenger services to tight schedules, and were also used on medium distance freight services. A number of the class were allocated to [[Kidderminster]] and [[Shrewsbury]] sheds and were regularly used on the Severn Valley Railway in its declining years. Classmate 4175 was involved in the [[Level crossing at Hill Farm, Northwood Lane#Accidents in the BR Era|fatal accident at Northwood Lane level crossing]] in August 1964.
== 42968 in service ==
42968 was originally numbered 13268, and entered traffic on 24th January 1934, allocated to Willesden shed. She was renumbered as 2968 in September 1935, and over her lifetime was allocated to a wide variety of sheds on the LMS Western Division, mostly in the North-West but including spells at Aston, Bescot and Nuneaton. Her final shed before withdrawal in 1966 was Springs Branch. By 1960, she had covered over 700,000 miles.


The 5101 Class was an updated version by CB Collett of Churchward's 1903 3100/5100 Class. Fellow class member [[GWR Large Prairie 5164]] is an early 1930 example, while 4150 is a later post-War example. The 41xx number arose from the GWR practice, where more than 100 locomotives of one class were built, of maintaining the second number in the series and re-using older sequences of numbers where necessary. == 42968 in preservation ==
Following withdrawal 42968 was purchased for scrap by [[Barry Scrapyard | Woodham Bros]]. By 1969 all other members of the class had been cut up, and the [[Stanier Mogul Fund]] was formed to preserve her as an important example of an early Stanier locomotive. After four years the Fund had raised Woodham Bros's asking price, and the loco was hauled to the SVR by rail in December 1973. Restoration began the following year.

The loco moved for the first time under her own steam in preservation in 1990, and officially entered SVR service in April 1991 in LMS livery and numbered 2968. Unfortunately, she had to be withdrawn from traffic in December 1993 due to a loose tyre. Following tyre replacement she re-entered service in December 1994.


==4150 in service==
In 1996 42969 was mainline-certified, and over the next two years hauled a number of [[The Severn Valley Railway on the main line | main-line railtours]], including the Settle-Carlisle line from Crewe to Carlisle. She also took part in the 1998 "Steam On The Met" event. 42968’s main line career included a couple of ‘firsts’:
4150 was built at Swindon and entered service in June 1947. The first allocation was to nearby Stourbridge Junction shed (84F) where the locomotive would have worked local services towards Birmingham.
:On 22nd November 1997, 42968 and 7325 were the first steam locos in preservation to work a train over the 1:38 Lickey Incline.
:On 3rd January 1998, 42968 set off on a rail tour from Shrewsbury to Newport and Gloucester via the Central Wales line. At Llandrindod Wells it was discovered that the track ahead was flooded, so 42968 drew the train back to Craven Arms running tender first, then ran around to take a detour via the Welsh Marches route. This was the first time that a steam-hauled special had been rerouted mid-tour.


In November 1948 it was involved in an accident at Lapworth station. While running round its train bunker first, it was struck by another train which had overrun a signal at danger in thick fog.<ref>[http://www.rowingtonrecords.com/Railways/Lapworth%20Station/index.html Newspaper cuttings on www.rowingtonrecords.com]</ref> 4150 returned to traffic 45 days later, after repair at Swindon. 1953 to 1962 was spent in the West Country, mainly at Newton Abbot. The final allocation was to Severn Tunnel Junction where 4150, by then in run down condition, was used to bank heavy trains through the tunnel. The locomotive was withdrawn from service by BR in June 1965 after 18 years in service and sent to [[Barry Scrapyard]].

A boiler inspection in February 1998 found that firebox crown stays were wasted below Railtrack requirements for main line working, curtailing further railtours. However the locomotive continued in SVR service and was invited by London Underground to take part in that year’s ‘Steam on the Met’. Later that year, the locomotive was withdrawn for a full overhaul, which was completed in 2003, and she re-entered service in BR livery. She remained in service until the expiry of her boiler certificate in 2013; her current overhaul began in early 2014. {{As of|2017}} work is progressing on the boiler and other components at [[Bridgnorth Loco Works]]. ==4150 in preservation==
4150 was purchased at a cost of £2,750 from Barry in 1973 by [[The 4150 Fund]]. No 4150 left Barry in 1974 in company with No.7812 Erlestoke Manor, and was towed by a Class 25 diesel to Parkend on the Dean Forest Railway.

Restoration at Parkend proved impossible, and in 1977 the Fund’s shareholders voted to move 4150 to the SVR, with the locomotive arriving at [[Bewdley]] on 19 January 1978. Restoration commenced following arrival in [[Bewdley Down Yard|Bewdley Yard]], but by the mid-80s fund raising and restoration progress had slowed considerably. In 2007 the Fund formed a new committee, and with renewed enthusiasm began a concerted effort to complete the restoration which had by then been in progress for more than 30 years. By 2014 a new bunker had been completed except for riveting and welding, and construction of new tanks was in progress.

By 2016 riveting of the side tanks and bunker was complete, leaving the baffles and other hidden parts to be welded in place after the major assemblies had been lifted on to the frames, to minimise the risk of distortion. On 30 March 2021, 4150 and the Fund's stores van [[GWR/BR 92080 Fruit D Van|Fruit D 92080]] were shunted out of Bewdley yard in preparation for a move to Bridgnorth,<ref>[http://www.4150.org.uk/news/4150_mar21.html 4150 Fund March 2021 Update]</ref> more than 43 years after the locomotive arrived there. The chassis moved to [[Bridgnorth Loco Works]] on 30 April 2021. The locomotive’s present boiler is number '''5895''', a Class B/'Standard 2' boiler built at Swindon in September 1939. A full report in 2008 from the SVR's boiler foreman and a further inspection in 2018 showed the boiler to be in good condition, having been fitted with a new inner firebox at its last overhaul. It was expected to require the standard repairs: new flues, tubes, steel stays replaced, crown stays replaced, foundation ring removed to check for grooving and replaced, welding repairs to front tube plate and possible boiler barrel patch.

By November 2016 the Fund had received confirmation that 4150 had a slot in the Bridgnorth Boiler Shop in the last quarter of 2017.<ref>4150 Fund Newsletter 2017, January 2017</ref> The Fund intended it to go to Bridgnorth in November 2017 for overhaul and in March 2017 it was lifted onto [[GWR 40554 Chaired Sleeper Wagon|wagon 40554]] for preparation work to begin.<ref>[http://www.svr.co.uk/pdf/Special%20Events/SVR%20Peep%20Behind%20the%20Scenes%202017.pdf Peep Behind The Scenes leaflet July 2017]</ref> Workload at in the boilershop meant that instead it was decided that boilershop staff would provide assistance to the owning group to accelerate the boiler overhaul at Bewdley.<ref>SVR News 200, Winter 2017</ref>

By January 2018 the boiler and firebox cladding had been completed and then dismantled. The boiler had passed an ultrasonic test on the thickness of the plates and passed a non-destructive test for cracks. The boiler was moved from Bewdley to Bridgnorth on 18 June 2018 for work to be carried out in the boiler shop. On 29 December 2022 it was temporarily lifted into the locomotive's frames to enable all the large copper pipes to be made up and fittings test-fitted. It will need to be removed again at a later date to carry out hydraulic and steam testing<ref>4150 Fund shareholder update, January 2023</ref>.

Steam Locomotives

4150 is a GWR 5101 class 2-6-2T locomotive, commonly referred to as a 'Large Prairie'. It is the only SVR-based locomotive not to have steamed in preservation.

Large prairie tanks were a common sight on the GWR, with more than 300 built between 1903 and 1949 to the same basic design. The locomotives were designed to haul semi-fast and suburban passenger services to tight schedules, and were also used on medium distance freight services. A number of the class were allocated to Kidderminster and Shrewsbury sheds and were regularly used on the Severn Valley Railway in its declining years. Classmate 4175 was involved in the fatal accident at Northwood Lane level crossing in August 1964.

The boiler had passed an ultrasonic test on the thickness of the plates and passed a non-destructive test for cracks. Work had commenced on drilling out firebox steel stays and grinding off rivet heads holding the foundation ring before the boiler headed north.[17][18]

The boiler was moved from Bewdley to Bridgnorth on 18 June 2018 for work to be carried out in the boiler shop. On 29 December 2022 it was temporarily lifted into the locomotive's frames to enable all the large copper pipes to be made up and fittings test-fitted. It will need to be removed again at a later date to carry out hydraulic and steam testing[19].
