Collisions

Waterworks Crossing

A fatal accident occurred at Waterworks Crossing on 12 January 1994 when a locomotive struck a van negotiating the crossing.[1] An inquest on 18 May 1994 recorded a verdict of 'accidental death' with no blame attached to the Railway.[2]

Northwood Crossing

On 25 November 2000 LMS Stanier 8F 48773 was involved in collision with an Astra van on Northwood Crossing, fortunately with no fatalities involved. HM Railway Inspectorate later confirmed that the Railway was not at fault, independent witnesses having testified that the driver had passed the flashing red lights when the train was only a few yards from the crossing.[3]

Fishermen's Crossing

On 16 August 2004 Fishermen's Crossing was the scene of a collision between Ivatt Class 2 46443 and a van which drove onto the crossing without stopping, the crossing gates having been left open by a previous user.[4] The van was carried some distance down the track, with the driver suffering injury[5] though fortunately not fatal. H.M. Railway Inspectorate found no fault with the locomotive/train braking or the signing of the crossing, and no blame for the collision was attached to the Railway[6][7].

Derailments

Folly Point

On 21 April 1991 Stanier Mogul 42968 was running tender first on a passenger train when the leading left wheel of the tender derailed by flange climbing. The derailment occurred on a right-hand curve over the site of an embankment slip at Folly Point which was subject to a temporary 5 mph speed restriction. The SVR's investigation found that the weight distribution between the wheels of the tender was not set up correctly following maintenance. The RAIB investigation into the 2009 derailment at Hampton Loade referred to this incident under "Previous occurrences of a similar character"[8].

Hampton Loade

On 28 September 2009, a derailment occurred when the tender of LMS Ivatt Class 4 43106 hauling a down passenger train became derailed as it approached Hampton Loade. There were no injuries. The immediate cause of the accident was the leading right-hand wheel of the tender flange climbing over the rail at the site of a track twist. An incorrect spring had been fitted to this axle of the tender.[8] BR 4345 Tourist Standard Open was also damaged.

Eardington is situated on Eardington Bank, mid-way between Bridgnorth and Hampton Loade. In recent years, rebuilding the platform was completed in 2019 and the water tower was dismantled in 2021. Although the station no longer features in daily operations, it resumed use during gala events in 2023 more than 40 years since regular timetabled trains ceased. (Full article...)

For 101 years between 1862 and 1963, the Severn Valley Railway formed part of the national railway network, running for 40 miles between Hartlebury and Shrewsbury. Established as a separate company, it was mainly operated by the Great Western Railway (GWRGreat Western Railway) and later by British Railways (BRBritish Rail or British Railways).

The present day Severn Valley Railway (SVRSevern Valley Railway) was established in 1965 to preserve part of the line as a heritage railway. Today it has six stations and two halts and runs for 16 miles along the Severn Valley between Bridgnorth in Shropshire and Kidderminster in Worcestershire, following the course of the River Severn for much of its route. Operations involve a mixture of steam and heritage diesel-hauled services.

This unofficial website is a project aimed to collect information and record events relating to the SVRSevern Valley Railway, both past and present.
