Friends of Kidderminster Town Station

Revision as of 18:22, 30 September 2018 by Patrick Hearn (talk | contribs) (Info added)

A group based at Kidderminster Town Station with a goal to add those "Oh-so-important" features of a typical GWR station which were not included in the original 1984 building. The Friends is run by a small committee of three and the Honorary President is Lucinda Lambton, a photographer, writer and broadcaster on mainly architectural matters. On 23 September 1984 Lambton christened the new Kidderminster Turntable and also officiated at a ceremony to mark the laying of the corbels for the Friends' project for the 'porte cochere' canopy at the station.[1]

They also publish a magazine three times a year, and publish selected articles on the Friends of Kidderminster Town website.

Contents

Early days

The group was started at a meeting on 30 October 1993 by a number of SVR volunteers, following a day out on the Bluebell Railway. Noting that the ‘Friends of Kingscote’ had done substantial work to improve Kingscote station at no cost to the Bluebell, they quickly formed the Friends of Kidderminster Town with the idea of doing the same for the SVR.

Fundraising

The Friends have a Fund Shop on the station concourse at Kidderminster. The Fund also offers membership and invites sponsorship of projects.

Projects

Their website lists over 30 projects completed by the Friends including:

  • Much of the GWR style spearpoint fencing around the concourse
  • The ornamental roof crestings, the patterns for these cast roof crestings having been produced at the SVR's pattern shop by copying fragments of originals recovered from Ross-on-Wye
  • The GWR 'pagoda' shelter at Northwood Halt
  • Repairing GWR speartop panels for the terrace alongside the new restaurant at Bridgnorth.

For 101 years between 1862 and 1963, the Severn Valley Railway formed part of the national railway network, running for 40 miles between Hartlebury and Shrewsbury. Established as a separate company, it was mainly operated by the Great Western Railway (GWRGreat Western Railway) and later by British Railways (BRBritish Rail or British Railways).

The present day Severn Valley Railway (SVRSevern Valley Railway) was established in 1965 to preserve part of the line as a heritage railway. Today it has six stations and two halts and runs for 16 miles along the Severn Valley between Bridgnorth in Shropshire and Kidderminster in Worcestershire, following the course of the River Severn for much of its route. Operations involve a mixture of steam and heritage diesel-hauled services.
