Talk:Locomotive timeline

I've created a very basic page in case anyone else wants to have a go at editing it. It's a very user unfriendly interface, you need to convert date ranges to the number of months, then span that many columns with a blank cell.--Graham Phillips 110 (talk) 13:39, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

6960 will need doing, but I'm not sure if it can be done yet and how, I'm afraid--Patrick Hearn (talk) 11:24, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

D3802 should go red please from April 2021 but the coding defeats me!

If you could amend please, Welsh Guardsman should go red from 2022. 50035 and D1062 should be green. Thanks--Patrick Hearn (talk) 02:24, 29 August 2022 (UTC)--Patrick Hearn (talk) 02:24, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

All done. "50135 had returned to service by 2012" was a bit vague, but I think I've got it all near enough right. Let me know if there's any errors. --Graham Phillips 110 (talk) 19:04, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

A bit of a checklist - apologies and thanks in advance. Add 2023. Add 4930 and 7812 return to traffic. 1501 and 2857 to red. Add 37308 (red from July 20) and 50033 (red May 18, green Oct 18, red June 21, green Oct 22). 33108 red from May 21. D821 red from 2021. 50031 red from 2020. 12099 is red since 'pre-COVID' - I suggest 1/1/20.--Patrick Hearn (talk) 19:41, 1 January 2023 (UTC)

I think I've got them all, let me know if I've missed any. 1501 and 2857 look a bit odd at the moment as I've already set them to red from February and what should be a zero width bar still shows up on the far right. That should right itself next month. I'm going to have a go at writing instructions on how to update it every January 1st. Hopefully the wiki will outlast me, so I could do with making it easy for someone else to do this without necessarily understanding how it all works. --Graham Phillips 110 (talk) 10:03, 3 January 2023 (UTC)
Brilliant, thanks. At the risk of saying 'you missed a bit', the date for 40106 coming to the SVR is a couple of decades early!--Patrick Hearn (talk) 17:03, 3 January 2023 (UTC)

If you could amend please, 42968 should go green from 2023.--Patrick Hearn (talk) 07:32, 21 October 2023 (UTC)

More notes/prompts please. Add 2024. 45110 to former locos. 43106 and 34027 out of traffic 2024. Add D1048?--Patrick Hearn (talk) 01:46, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

45110 moved, others not done--Patrick Hearn (talk) 20:20, 31 August 2024 (UTC)
I've reformatted the underlying table data to make it a bit easier to follow. We define green as "in service", so I've updated 13268 to start in March this year (entry into passenger service) rather than the start of the boiler ticket in 2023 (but open to using any other date if preferred). I've also done 45110 leaving, 43106 and 34027 out of traffic and D1048 arriving. I've tested it in my Sandbox page and now done the live update. It could do with a review for any other updates, particularly the diesels. --Robin (talk) 13:41, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
Impressive! A quick look says 33108, D821 and 12099 have all returned to traffic--Patrick Hearn (talk) 22:43, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
Thanks. I've updated 33108 and D821. 12099 needs an update to the article to cover the major overhaul (which began pre-Covid), but I haven't seen a report of when it was completed (it was still in progress in SVR News for Spring and no Diesel report for Summer. I'm hoping it will be covered in the Autumn SVR News, unless you've seen it mentioned elsewhere? --Robin (talk) 12:58, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
I removed it from the Rolling stock currently under restoration page in an amend of 5 February 2024 and, though I can recall reading of its completion, unfortunately I can't immediately find a source.--Patrick Hearn (talk) 21:47, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
Following up on the article in this month's Branch Lines and the resulting edit to the 12099 page, I've found that I took a picture of it during the Supporters Day on 21 June. It was in the TMD and apparently still being worked on, so presumably the entry to service was after that. I've therefore gone for September as the re-entry date. See if anything more accurate crops up in a future SVR News. --Robin (talk) 14:35, 10 October 2024 (UTC)

Re. GWR 1450 - Following the comments in SVR News 227 about its return to the SVR following overhaul I've made an executive decision to treat it as with 7802 while overhauled off the SVR, and treat it as resident throughout. Feel free to undo!--Patrick Hearn (talk) 18:39, 29 September 2024 (UTC)

Sounds reasonable to me. --Robin (talk) 16:56, 1 October 2024 (UTC)
Operational as of October 2024, but I can't get it to work :( Can anyone help please? TIA--Patrick Hearn (talk) 11:26, 1 November 2024 (UTC)

The SVR has in 2024 described 20048, 37263 and D182 as 'home fleet'. They're not included here though. Should they be?--Patrick Hearn (talk) 18:43, 29 September 2024 (UTC)

Good question. 20048 and D182 are listed as both Diesel Locomotives hired by the SVR and Diesel locomotives normally based at the SVR. Should they be one or the other, or do both apply? 37263 is only listed as a 'hired' loco - should it be 'normally based' instead (or as well)? Subject to that, if they are now resident then I suppose they should be included here. --Robin (talk) 16:56, 1 October 2024 (UTC)
Just to add to the confusion, the Diesel Bash event page on the SVR website refers to "From the home-fleet;... Class 20s,... 37263,... D182,...". The WTT includes 20048, 20189 and 20142, none of which are shown as guests, so does that mean all three 20s are now home fleet on that basis (or at least deemed on hire)? We currently have a page for 20048 and 20189 but not 20142, so I'm not sure if we should add 20189 or delete 20142. If 20048 is home fleet, then does Class 20189 Limited warrant its own page as a preservation group associated with the SVR? (If so, that might be the place to put the other 2 locos). Thoughts welcome... --Robin (talk) 16:32, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
I've been toying with (a) adding 37263 as 'normally based', and leaving it and 20048 and D182 on the 'hired' page as that's what we've done in similar circs (Class 17, 31 etc.) (b) Setting up owner pages for 20189 Ltd and Peal Locomotive Company, and (c) adding 20142 on occasional hire rather than 'home fleet'? I'm away until the weekend, so letting the ideas percolate! It's one of those where there's no right or wrong answer. Happy for you to proceed as you think best though...--Patrick Hearn (talk) 19:04, 3 October 2024 (UTC)

Updating the tables each year[edit source]

  • This page calls two templates, Template:Years for timeline and Template:Months for timeline. Each template needs to be updated at the start of each year.
  • The tables cover n years. The numbers in the 'colspans' for each loco, including the "#expr:" add up to (n-1)x12 months. The last 'colspan' is automatically increased by the elapsed number of months in the current year.
  • For example, as of September 2024, the table runs from 1965 to 2024, ie 60 years or 720 months. Looking at 7325, 127+142+98+341=708 (i.e. 59x12). The table is currently stopping at September 2024.

The update process is as follows:

  • Step 1: Edit the template Template:Years for timeline. Add a new year in the same format, eg || colspan ="12" | [[Severn_Valley_Railway_Timeline_2020-2029#2024 | 24 ]]
  • Step 2: Edit the template Template:Months for timeline. Add an extra {{12 months for timeline}} before the closing style=
  • Step 3: Add an extra 12 months to the last colspan in each loco (so 7325 became 341 instead of 329 etc). That will roll all locos forward in their existing state. All the tables really need to be done at the same time.
  • Step 4: Account for any changes of status. That requires an extra 'colspan' in the pre-change colour crystalised at the relevant number of months, and the final 'colspan' in the relevant post-change colour starting at a new number keeping the total at (n-1)x12 months. If the change is in say January of the current year, then the cumulative months would be 709, so the formula would be '-1 + current month' rather than 'x + current month'.
