Talk:List of infrastructure

I've created this page as a merger of List of level crossings and List of bridges and viaducts, although I've left those two pages in existence in case we decide to split them apart again! --Danny252 (talk) 11:16, 18 January 2015 (UTC)
Considering the possible impact to the SVR's re-opening on time due to possible over-running Severn Trent/Amey works it's surprising that there is no reference to the Elan Valley aqueduct amongst the List of infrastructure.Boldford (talk) 14:31, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

I put the content of the original two pages together by going through the General Appendix route map (online version) and listing all the crossings, bridges and tunnels in it. The EVA isn't marked on it as infrastructure, just mentioned in an annotation describing a nearby PWay access gate.--WillSalt (talk) 18:04, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

I suppose once it's all buried and backfilled, it's not a structure as such and the railway has no responsibility to maintain it. I was going to do some sort of "From the window" page eventually to cover landmarks like this, including the aqueduct, Dowles Bridge piers, Trimpley Reservoirs, Daniel's Mill etc. --Graham Phillips 110 (talk) 18:12, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

That sounds like a good idea - the booklet the railway offers to passengers might be good for suggesting what sights to include. --WillSalt (talk) 18:17, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

I've created stub pages for all of the locations, so at least you can now click through the entire line from Bridgnorth to Kidderminster. Hopefully photos will follow! --Danny252 (talk) 12:53, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

Thanks! I've got photos of most of the rest, which I'm still going through working out which is which (and how many crossings I've found so far that aren't listed!). Will add more photos when I get a few moments.
Reading the earlier comments, a 'From the window' page does indeed sound like a good idea. Are things like the Carriage Shed and the Diesel Depot part of the SVR's infrastructure to go here (like the turntable) or are they 'from the window' items? Thoughts welcome. --Robin (talk) 21:25, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
I'd probably put those in. I was also considering linking through the station pages, e.g. Highley Barrow Crossing - Highley Station - Crossing at the top of Highley bank. It's probably useful to try and work out which crossings aren't listed, and I'm especially doubtful of the section between Highley and Hampton - there's crossings listed that I can't identify off the top of my head, and some others which I don't think are listed! As an aside, I've given the link to the list out to the latest signalling trainees, to help them get familiarised with the line. They do a line walk as part of their training, but this page helps highlight the important features, and is honestly far better than anything the SVR has officially put together! --Danny252 (talk) 08:52, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
Curiously I'm least confident about HY-HL as well -I'm sure there are more actual crossings than are listed. If all else fails I'll stick in a temporary page with all the pictures and where they are relative to the mileposts in that section and seek opinion on which is which and what they should be called.--Robin (talk) 21:13, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
It's probably just that there's so few identifying features - everywhere between Hampton and Country Park looks identical to me. --Danny252 (talk) 12:23, 12 June 2015 (UTC)
I've added pictures of everything I've seen between the two with new pages where relevant, on the assumption that they are all valid crossings. It would be useful if someone who walks the line or knows the area could validate the descriptions and locations - in particular there was no mention in the original list of the crossing south of milepost 144¾ but north of 144½ which looks long-standing, while the one that is actually south of 144½ (the dirt track with the open gates) looks much newer. As a regular passenger, I'd hate for the trainee signalers to be relying on wrong information!
When I put together the list originally, I recall I did have trouble marrying up the contents of the General Appendix with the OS map on that stretch of line. It didn't help that I've never walked that stretch myself, and that there aren't many identifying features even shown on a map - that's why so many are just in the list as "crossing south of MP X" and so on. --WillSalt (talk) 21:29, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

A449 bridge reconstruction

I feel the following from the GWR Magazine of November 1926 is relevant and wants recording somewhere, but until, if ever, we do a full infrastructure list from Hartlebury to Shrewsbury, I don't know where. "The bridge which carries the Severn Valley line over the road at Hartlebury is to be reconstructed" --Graham Phillips 110 (talk) 14:38, 20 December 2022 (UTC)

Thanks. I've updated the Stourport Branch page which covers all the infrastructure between Hartlebury and Bewdley including that bridge. Curiously there is no equivalent page covering the whole section north of Bridnorth - maybe something I'll get around to at some point. --Robin (talk) 15:59, 20 December 2022 (UTC)

For 101 years between 1862 and 1963, the Severn Valley Railway formed part of the national railway network, running for 40 miles between Hartlebury and Shrewsbury. Established as a separate company, it was mainly operated by the Great Western Railway (GWRGreat Western Railway) and later by British Railways (BRBritish Rail or British Railways).

The present day Severn Valley Railway (SVRSevern Valley Railway) was established in 1965 to preserve part of the line as a heritage railway. Today it has six stations and two halts and runs for 16 miles along the Severn Valley between Bridgnorth in Shropshire and Kidderminster in Worcestershire, following the course of the River Severn for much of its route. Operations involve a mixture of steam and heritage diesel-hauled services.

Unsurprisingly, there are a large number of questions about the SVRSevern Valley Railway, both in pre-preservation days and for a number of historical items since then. Take a visit down to Query Corner to see if you have a recollection relating to some long forgotten event, or know of a reliable source (maybe an early edition of the SVR News?) that might have the information we need!

In addition are a number of stub articles requiring further input.
