GWR Large Prairie 4144 is a classmate of the SVR’s 4150 and 5164, and a brief description of the 5101 Class is included on the GWR Large Prairie 5164 page. The locomotive was on hire to the SVR between March and November 2019.

4144 in service
4144 was built at Swindon and entered service in September 1946. It served principally at Tondu (86F) and Severn Tunnel Junction (84E) and was withdrawn from BR service at the latter in June 1965.[1]
4144 in preservation
4144 was acquired from Barry Scrapyard jointly by the Didcot-based Great Western Society and one of its members in 1974. It was restored by 1997 and took part in “Steam on the Met” in 1998.[2] In Spring 2001, 4144 appeared a guest at the SVR’s Spring Gala ‘Branch Line Weekend’.
After an overhaul, 4144 re-entered service at Didcot after overhaul in May 2015.[2] In March 2019 the locomotive made a return appearance at the SVR’s Spring Gala, during which some disruption was caused when it became temporarily trapped on the points at the south end of platform 1 at Kidderminster. The loco was undamaged and continued in the gala. In April 2019 the SVR announced that 4144 was to remain on hire until 4 November 2019.
