==5043 in preservation==The coach was originally bought by the [[The 2857 Society | 2857 Society]] and arrived on the SVR by rail in October 1981. It had been adapted for use as a mess coach in a breakdown train, including stripping out compartments and removing most of the internal partitions, fitting a stove and workbenches and blanking off of some of the doors and windows. On arrival, it served as the 2857 Society’s workshop, store and mess vehicle.<br> 

It is The GW(SVR)A eventually intended to convert this vehicle to a wheelchair accessible Buffet Car, which will have with an open style for overflow dining if needed. The kitchen will not be there and instead it will hold wheelchairs. The pantry will have a buffet counter. In due course there will be an appeal for funds to make the conversion.<ref>[http://forum.svra.org.uk/viewtopic.php?p=50670#50670 SVR Unofficial Form 30 May 2016]</ref>  {{As of|2017|3}} the GW(SVR)A announced that it has agreed to exchange [[GWR 4786 Full Third]] for 5043. The work described above will be carried out by [[The LNER (SVR) Coach Fund]] and this coach will become their next project on completion of the restoration of [[GWR 17410 'Toad' 20T Goods Brake Van]].
