Category:SVR fundraising lotteries

The SVR itself regularly organises membership-wide raffles (rather than groups on the railway doing so for their own benefit) to raise money for particular projects.

History

The practice began in the 1960s when quarterly raffles were held by the Severn Valley Railway Society to help raise funds to purchase the line between Bridgnorth and Hampton Loade.[1]

From the 1970s on, raffles were promoted by the Severn Valley Railway Association. Normal practice was to hold two raffles each year, one organised by the Association committee and the other by one of its individual branches.[2] Some raffles were for major infrastructure projects such as Bridgnorth Bypass Bridge, or purchase and restoration of particular locomotives. Others were for less glamorous projects like better washing facilities for working volunteers[3].

At some time after 2006 raffles became annual rather than biannual, and have been organised by the Guarantee Company since the merger with the Association in October 2015.

By 2021 raffles were organised by SVR Charitable Trust.
