Caledonian Railway Goods Van 302080

Caledonian Railway Goods Van 2080 is a 10-ton ventilated van, built to diagram 67. These are 4-wheel vans with a 10ft 6in wheelbase and a wooden underframe. Between 1903 and 1918 over 1,300 vans were constructed to this diagram by the Caledonian and private builders. Originally built with a roof door, batches from 1907 incorporated end ventilators. During WW1 some were converted to carry cordite paste, used in the manufacture of munitions. Several were later sold to private owner use.[1]

2080 was built at St Rollox, Glasgow in 1910. It was taken on by the LMSLondon Midland & Scottish Railway at Grouping in 1923, and renumbered 302080. It was later sold to Cadbury’s where it was an internal user vehicle, renumbered 278.

278 was donated to the SVRSevern Valley Railway by Cadbury’s in June 1967, and it is seen stored at Kidderminster Railway Museum. With sister 304543 it left the SVRSevern Valley Railway in May 2016 for a new home on Caledonian metals at Ferryhill Railway Heritage Trust, Aberdeen.[2]
