The European Union (EU) and its predecessors the European Community (EC) and European Economic Community (EEC) distributes grants in member States through bodies such as the European Union Regional Development Fund. The fund aims to strengthen economic and social cohesion in the EU by correcting imbalances between its regions. It instituted a programme to achieve an increase in the economic productivity of the West Midlands region, to reduce unemployment and inequalities and to ensure sustainable regional economic growth.
