Talk:Sandbourne Viaduct

Was Sandbourne always a double track viaduct, or did a different viaduct exist before the Kidderminster line was built? I know much of the original SVR was built to double line dimensions originally (see e.g. Oldbury viaduct), so this might be another case. --Danny252 (talk)

The original text on this page referred to the historical use of 'Sambourne Viaduct' as a misspelling. There's evidence on the internet of a place 'Sambourne' described both as Bewdley or near Kidderminster, a substantial Sambourne House used for evacuees, and several road names in Bewdley with that spelling. I'm not sure whether it's a variant spelling, a discrete place (as is Wribbenhall, for example) or whether the Viaduct was in fact just misspelt. I have however removed reference to a misspelling, and added a note.--Patrick Hearn (talk) 11:13, 24 October 2024 (UTC)

The large country house next to the viaduct (where Sandbourne Drive is today) was named Sandbourne House according to the 1880s and later OS maps. I therefore suspect that the viaduct which dated from around that time would always have been Sandbourne (or misspelled if not). It's possible that Sambourne was one of those historical variant spellings, but there doesn't seem to be much turning up in Google to support it. For example, the evacuees article which names Sambourne House might be referring to a different house in the area, but Googling "Sambourne House" and "Bewdley" doesn't find much else except that one article, so I suspect it may have been a misspelling by the article's author. Widening the search in Google to just "Sambourne" and "Bewdley" mainly finds a quote "In 1704, the manor of Neen Savage was purchased from the family of Kettleby by John Soley, of Sambourne, near Bewdley, though as late as 1732 it occurs in conveyances of the Kettleby estates..." but not much since. More recent results don't find a lot that stands up to scrutiny, for example the Geograph photo captioned "passing Sambourne Drive" is actually Sandbourne Drive, etc. To add to the confusion, there is a village named Sambourne in Warwickshire (near Redditch) which tends to crop up in search results. --Robin (talk) 20:07, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
Noted, thanks. I have removed the note.--Patrick Hearn (talk) 20:51, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
