I have made this table sortable. The dates would need to be in format to allow sorting by date, I have had a look on the wiki help but don't understand. Can anyone help? I think "31 January - 2 February 2013" could just be shown as "January 2013" - thoughts? Thanks--Patrick Hearn (talk) 11:07, 22 January 2017 (UTC)

The only way I could think to do a date range as sortable would be something like "2016/01/31 - 2016/02/02", as that date format allows sorting properly without special date-specific handling. --Danny252 (talk) 15:23, 22 January 2017 (UTC)
Just giving the start date (or if preferred having two columns with 'from' and 'to') would mean you could use genuine dates in the column(s). The Wikimedia date template shows how to enter dates as {{date|2013-01-31}} or {{date|31 Jan 2013}} and have them appear as 31 Jan 2013. Those should then sort automatically. Makes entering data more long-winded, and we don't currently have that template (but could import it, Dan?).
Alternatively, if left as text there is some Wikimedia help on Date sorting problems where you define the column as date-sortable, and Tips and Tricks for sorting dates using a date sorting template. Not sure if that approach is simpler or not.--Robin (talk) 17:31, 22 January 2017 (UTC)
I've got it working for a single date. See User:Graham Phillips 110. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it defaults to UK date format dd/mm/yyyy --Graham Phillips 110 17:43, 22 January 2017 (UTC)
Looks like it picks the first date from a date range as well. User:Graham Phillips 110 --Graham Phillips 110 (talk) 17:57, 22 January 2017 (UTC)
And it's even possible to define the sortable value (e.g. numeric date) while displaying different data (e.g. text date) in the cell. Someone's really put a lot of thought in to this. --Graham Phillips 110 (talk) 18:14, 22 January 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for editing these. I was trying to get my head round it!--Patrick Hearn (talk) 09:48, 23 January 2017 (UTC)

Taking this page forward

I have added pretty much what I can find from checking SVRSevern Valley Railway Online forum, Society websites and Web Round Ups - isn't there a lot? The page is quite big now too. Some questions please: (1) should we make the tables collapsible? (2) Should we split out diesels into a different page (3) should we through Facebook and forums ask people to contribute additional info? (4) Anything else? Thanks--Patrick Hearn (talk) 21:02, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

There are still a large number of missing Thomas appearances by 686 which are mentioned in passing in SVRSevern Valley Railway News but not fully listed. Otherwise answers from my POV are (1) Collapsible? No reason not to do so. I'll do it but leave them open by default. They can be closed by default if preferred. (2) Split Diesels? Probably not, unless we find a lot more. It would mean editing the links you've recently added. (3) Forums? I wouldn't worry about it personally, but no objections if you wanted to. (4) Anything else? Once we deviated from a single table, I did ponder whether it would be better split by Loco rather than by decade. On reflection, I'd say leave as is. We could copy the information by loco into a collapsed table on each loco's page, as is already there with the main line appearances. Another one on the long term to do list... --Robin (talk) 16:40, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. More 686 added, from the WILT website.--Patrick Hearn (talk) 22:03, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Which locos to include

Is it right to include locomotives which were booked but then didn't attend? Personal view is no, but other opinions welcome. --Robin (talk) 21:25, 22 January 2017 (UTC)

I'll be led by others. I wasn't sure, the only reason for doing so is that someone later may add one, not knowing it was then cancelled--Patrick Hearn (talk) 09:43, 23 January 2017 (UTC)
A further thought is they could be split into a new section - cancelled visits?--Patrick Hearn (talk) 16:23, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
