Mike Ball
Michael Ernest (Mike) Ball (b. November 1943) was chairman of SVR(H) between 2021 and 2023, in succession to Nick Paul and in turn succeeded by Chris Walton. He is a Vice President of SVR(H).
Mike worked for Honeywell of the USA and for Bull of France in a career spanning 35 years. Prior to taking early retirement Mike’s role was Bull’s Director of Customer Services for the UK and Ireland, a multi-million pound business with a staff of some 800 people.
He joined the Railway as a volunteer in 1986. He was chairman of the operating committee for seven years and was heavily involved in the fundraising following the 2007 storm damage, becoming a director. He became deputy chairman in 2011. He subsequently led the development of the SVR’s working relationships with main line train operating companies.
After Colin Binch stepped down as General Manager in September 2006, the responsibilties were assumed by an 'Executive Committee' which reported to the Railway's joint Boards, until a permanent replacement was found (Nick Ralls who was appointed in June 2007). The 'Committee' comprised a group of three volunteers led by Roger Smith, assisted by Tony Bending and Mike.[1]
Mike was also a director of the guarantee company between 26 July 2003 and 18 March 2014. On succeeding Nick Paul, he also became a director of the SVR Charitable Trust[2].
