Carriage type BCK designates a carriage with a Guards's compartment, together with passenger compartments of more than one class accessed from a corridor.

Following the introduction of TOPSTotal Operations Processing System, an American computer system adopted by BR from the late 1960s to number and manage rolling stock. in the late 1960s, BRBritish Rail or British Railways carriages of this class were allocated the TOPS code AB31, denoting:

A: Passenger carrying stock
B: Gangwayed corridor brake
3: CompositeCarriage having more than one class of seating, ie First and Third or latterly First and Standard. (ie more than one) class
1: BRBritish Rail or British Railways Mark 1 carriage
