The 2251 class was intended for medium-powered freight duties with 120 being built by 1948. Members of the class saw service on the Branch.<ref name=Nabarro/>. The only surviving member of the class, [[GWR 2251 Class 3205|3205]] was the first locomotive to arrive on the SVR in preservation, remaining resident for the next 20 years.
