It is a type ‘Open A’, signifying a 10-ton capacity open wagon with a sheet support (which it no longer has) but not equipped with vacuum brakes.

97398 finished its working life with the Port of London Authority where it was numbered C 127. It arrived on the SVR from London on 13 August 1974.<ref>SVR Stock Book Ninth Edition</ref> It received a cosmetic repaint, but was built finally restored in 1921 to Diagram O181982. This required the complete replacement of the woodwork, Lot 857 at the Woolwich Arsenal under War production measurespoor condition of which was highlighted when one personput their foot through the floor. It is <ref>SVR News 66</ref> Once restored, it was used for storing coal at Arley during Christmas running for a type ‘Open A’number of years, signifying resulting in a 10second complete re-ton capacity open wagon timbering being required in 1991.<ref>SVR News 102</ref> Another overhaul was carried out in 2007, with a sheet support (which it no longer has) but not equipped with vacuum brakesnumber of side, end, door and planks being replaced after damage had been caused by an unsuccessful attempt to set fire to the wagon.
