Only 276 of this type were built at Derby in 1963 to diagram number 171 lot number 30731; they were often used on overnight sleeper trains.<ref name=StockBook>SVR Stock Book 9th Edition</ref>
It 21254 was preserved built at Derby in 1963 to diagram number 171 lot number 30731.<ref>Railway Heritage Register Carriage Survey</ref> Prior to withdrawal from service in 1981 and is seen photographed it was noted in March 2015 as part use on the "Night Scotsman" services into Kings Cross. It arrived on the SVR in August of the BR Maroon setthat year, having been purchased by a trustee of [[The Erlestoke Manor Fund]].<ref name=StockBook/>
