BRBritish Rail or British Railways Shed Codes
Shortly after nationalisation, the newly formed British Railways devised a system of identifying all locomotive depots by a unique code. Each Region was grouped into numbered districts, with the London Midland districts being numbered 1-28 and the Western Region districts 81-89. Within each district, the main shed was identified by the district number followed by the letter A, with subsidiary sheds B, C and D etc. Many of the sheds had sub-sheds (which carried the same shed code) where day-to-day servicing could be carried out.
The Severn Valley branch formed part of the Western Region from nationalisation until January 1963 when it was transferred into the London Midland Region. Shrewsbury, Kidderminster and Stourbridge sheds were transferred into the London Midland region in September 1963, although Worcester shed remained in the Western Region. Before that time, a reorganisation in 1960 had led to a number of sheds changing district, with Shrewsbury becoming a district in its own right.
