The term is commonly used to mean the stretch between the steep sided Ironbridge Gorge to the north and the flatter, more open countryside south of Bewdley.

Other uses
The land rising to either side of the entire 220 miles of the River Severn can be considered the Severn Valley. Examples of this wider usage include:
- Severn Valley Ward of Shropshire Council is located to the south of Shrewsbury and north of Much Wenlock, in which Cressage and Cross Houses are key settlement areas.[1]
- The term is used to cover the Severn Valley area including the three main towns of Welshpool, Newtown and Llanidloes.<ref>[https://www.growinpowys.com/severn-valley Grow in Powys
