Nicholson became a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1838.<ref>[https://gracesguide.co.uk/Robert_Nicholson Grace's Guide]</ref> He continued to work on other projects as well as railways. He helped plan and build the Whittle Dean Waterworks for which he also continued to act as Engineer and Manager until the time of his death. Between 1848 and 1850 he was employed to take a bill through Parliament to remove the government of the River Tyne from Newcastle Corporation.
