Michael (Mick) York joined the Severn Valley Railway Society in 1966 and has been a director of SVR(H) since 1975. He is also a SVR(H) Vice-President. Mick is self-employed, running his own courier business.
He has served as Chairman twice. He succeeded David Owen in 1993, in what he believed would be just a ‘holding’ capacity, saying: “I’ll take it on for six months”. In fact his tenure of office lasted six years. He was elected Chairman for a second time in 2002, succeeding Paul Fathers, and remained at the helm for a further nine years. He served in the role of either Chairman or Vice Chairman for more than 20 years until 19 July 2011, handing over to Nick Paul. “I’m 66 now, and it’s time for a change”, he said.[1]
In 2008 as SVR Chairman he was awarded the Transport Trust 'Preservationist of the Year' award for "...leading his organisation through a tremendous struggle against the adversity caused by a natural disaster."[2]
Mick is one of the members of the Master Neverers Association.
