Building of this class began in 1946 at Wolverton to diagram number 1999 lot number 14021938, but the Second Word War delayed the production of later batches. The LMS Open Third carriage seats 56 passengers at tables either side of a central aisle.

Three LMS Third Opens, 27218, 27220 and ==Service==27270, were all rescued intact from Didcot Yard was built in 1968March 1946 at Wolverton as lot number 1402 to diagram number 1999.<ref>[[Bibliography#Other References|Jenkinson & Essery (1977)]] p. 131. 27270 is normally used in Set L, having received a major rebuild in 1997</8. ref> It is owned by SVRsaw service with the LMS and later the BR London Midland Region as M27220M<ref>[[Bibliography#Other References|Longworth (H2019)]] p.285.</ref>.
