They were classed as a 'Toad' but unlike the [[GWR 17410 'Toad' 20T Goods Brake Van| typical GWR 'Toad' brake van]], the open verandah was boarded in with two small windows included at the front. They were fitted with a split 'stable door' arrangement, and doubled as mess and tool vans.<ref name=Atkins/> 40362 is thought to be the only survivor of this variant and therefore unique.<ref name = RHRWS/>
