Ernest Marples was Conservative Party Secretary of State for Transport from 1959–1964. Marples approved the ending of passenger services between Shrewsbury and Bewdley from 9 September 1963.

He also appointed Dr. Richard Beeching to head British Railways. Although the Severn Valley Branch closed under Beeching, its closure had been proposed before the appointment.

Marples had a 'colourful' life[1][2].
