A General Utility Van (GUV) is a type of rail vehicle built by British Rail and its predecessors, which was primarily used for transporting mail and parcels. GUVs were classified as Non Passenger Carrying Coaching Stock (NPCCS)
Following the introduction of TOPS in the late 1960s, BR carriages of this class were allocated the TOPS code NIV, denoting:
N: Non-passenger carrying stock
I: General utility van
V: Vacuum brake
GUV's adapted for BRUTE use were allocated TOPS code NKV.
