SVR member Mr Charles Newton had already bought [[LMS Ivatt Class 2 46521 | 46521]] before purchasing 78019 as a longer term restoration project. 78019 arrived by road at Bridgnorth from [[Barry Scrapyard]] on Saturday 10 March 1973.<ref>SVR News 27 p. 14.</ref><ref group="note">Stock Books Editions 5-8 all give the arrival date as 12 March. The contemporary SVR News article specifically refers to Saturday 10th (the 10th was a Saturday) therefore the stock book dates are assumed to be in error</ref>
Some restoration work took place during the following years, but was still not complete when in spring 1998 the Loughborough Standard Locomotive Group Ltd based at the Great Central Railway offered to complete the restoration of the locomotive on agreement that it then remained at the GCR for an undisclosed period of time. The deal, which resulted in joint equal ownership of the locomotive, was agreed and the move completed. {{As of|2021}} 78019 is still based at the GCR<ref>[[http://www.gcrailway.co.uk/the-railway/locomotives/78019-2/ GCR 78019 web page] (Retrieved 11 Jannuary 2021)</ref>.
78019 returned to the SVR as a gala visitor in spring 2010.
