Weighing 73 tonnes and delivering 1,000 horsepower, they were designed to work light mixed freight traffic at up to 75 mph. Members 2017 as a source of spare parts for the class are nicknamed “Choppers” because of the distinctive engine beat under load which resembles the sound of a helicopterowning group's other locomotives.

Some of the post-BR history of 20177 is owned by may be seen in photographs on the Somerset & Dorset Loco CompanyPreserved Diesels website. It 20177 was moved to Boden Rail, Washwood Heath in September 2014 to be stripped for sparesused by EWS at Toton<ref>UKLocos database ([http://wwwprsl.uk/uklocos.com/final-results.asp?action=display&Id=6765 UKLocos.com5639 link])</ref>where it was photographed in mid-2002 in a poor state of repair ([http://www.preserved-diesels.co.uk/2004/20177_1.htm link]). By October 2002 the locomotive had been acquired by present owners, the [[Somerset & Dorset Loco Company | Somerset & Dorset Locomotive Company]] and moved to their site at Yeovil. There the locomotive began the process of being stripped for spares for the Company's other locomotives [[BR Class 20 D8059 | D8059]] and [[BR Class 20 D8188 | D8188]] ([http://www.preserved-diesels.co.uk/2004/20177_6.htm link]). 20177 moved to Tyseley in 2004 with D8059, following which from where it returned moved to Kidderminster circa February 2015in 2010.<ref>Railway Illustrated[https://forum.svr-online.org.uk/viewtopic.php?t=1460&start=0 SVR-Online Forum]</ref>.

Following the departure of the owning group's other two locomotives in September 2017, 20177 left the SVR by road in October 2017 and was photographed at the scrapyard of C.F.
