D9551 is an 0-6-0 Class 14 650hp diesel hydraulic shunting locomotive. 56 of these locomotives were built by BRBritish Rail or British Railways’s Swindon Works between 1964 and 1965. Locomotives of the class were given the nickname “Teddy Bears”, after a comment by Swindon Works foreman George Cole "We've built the Great Bear, now we're going to build a Teddy Bear!"[1]

D9551 in service

D9551 entered service in September 1665 at Cardiff Canton. A move to Hull Dairycoates shed in January 1967 was followed by withdrawal in April 1968 after less than 2 years 7 months BRBritish Rail or British Railways service. [2]

D9551 went on to work for BSCBritish Steel Corporation, or British Sugar Corporation at Gretton Brook and Corby.[3]

D9551 in preservation

D9551 was preserved at the West Somerset Railway, before moving to the Royal Deeside Railway Preservation Society at Milton of Crathes in 2003.[3] The locomotive was acquired for the SVRSevern Valley Railway by the Severn Valley Railway Class 14 Company Ltd, arriving in November 2013. As of May 2015 an overhaul of ‘Angus’ is in progress at Bridgnorth.[4]
