The mechanical overhaul was completed around 1995, with work on the electrical circuits taking another two years.<ref>SVR News 122</ref> The locomotive was powered in 1997 and shunted carriages for the first time in 1998.<ref name=SB9/> By 1999 12099 was in sufficient working order to take part in the May 'Thomas' event.<ref>SVR News 130</ref> It was passed for line operations later the same year, although still requiring a repaint.<ref>SVR News 131</ref>.
On 20 April 2000, 12099 propelled the first rake of 10 coaches into the newly built [[Kidderminster Carriage Shed]].<ref name=SVR133/> In summer 2001 the locomotive became [[Tales from the Severn Valley#Minor_derailments|derailed ]] at Bewdley when the back siding track spread due to rotten sleepers.<ref>SVR News 136</ref>
In spring 2003 [[D3022]] took over duties as Kidderminster shunter following problems with 12099.<ref>SVR News 143, 146</ref> Test running to be returned to the working fleet took place at the end of 2006<ref>SVR News 156</ref>
