Sterns is notable for its place in notorious as a maintenance trouble spot due to the ground regularly slipping towards the Industrial Revolution. A telegraph pole which stood next to the line in the late 1970s has moved significantly closer to the local brick river since then and tile works as well as other industries. The sidings were progressively extended; by 1900 reaching almost &frac12; mile is now only just visible in length and containing three ground frames, each controlling the local points and signalstrees.
