The type was a post-World War 2 development of a 1936 design by London Transport CME William Graff-Baker, and when built was the longest all-welded steel wagon. As delivered it was fitted with a pair of 2-ton hoists<ref name=SB9>SVR Stock Book Ninth Edition</ref>.
==Preservation==It arrived on the SVR in on 11 April 1998 from Hatton Cross, where it had been in use on the Jubilee Line extension project. The 1998 Stock Book recorded that it was owned by [[SVR(H)]] and is seen included a picture of the wagon with the two hoists in situ.<ref name=SB9/> The picture shows the wagon at [[Arley]] in March 2015without the hoists.
