John <noglossary>Fowler</noglossary> 0-4-0DM shunter No 17 ‘Highflyer’ was the SVR’s first diesel locomotive. It arrived in 1971 and was used on engineers’ trains until 1981, when it suffered a catastrophic engine failure. It was scrapped the following year.
