The Class 08 Society was launched in Spring 1983 to secure a vacuum fitted BR Class 08 shunter, to be used on the SVR for ECS moves, P.Way work and other shunting purposes[1].
The Society successfully acquired D3022 in April of that year, bringing it to the SVR a month later[2].
The Society also acquired 13201 in 2003, with the option of restoration or use for spares on D3022[3]. Restoration was later completed.

In July 2025 the Society were in negotiations to transfer the two locomotives to the custodianship of the Charitable Trust to secure their future use on the Railway.[4]
