The first proposal for a railway using the Severn Valley was made in 1845 by the grandly named Oxford and Worcester Extension & Chester Junction Railway. The line would have been built to the GWR’s broad gauge, and would have linked Worcester to the Ironbridge Gorge via Bewdley and Bridgnorth. Despite Robert Stephenson being one of the Railway’s Engineers, the plans were rejected by Parliament and by November 1846 the company had been voluntarily wound up.
