Carriage type FO (First Open) designates a carriage with open seating, normally around tables, for first class passenger use.

Following the introduction of TOPS in the late 1960s, BR carriages of this class were allocated the TOPS code AD11, denoting:

A: Passenger carrying stock
D: Gangwayed open (2+1 seating)
1: First class
1: BR Mark 1 carriage
