Caledonian Railway Goods Van 302080

Caledonian Railway Goods Van 2080 is an outside-framed 10-ton ventilated van, built to diagram 67. These are 4-wheel vans with a 10ft 6in wheelbase and a wooden underframe. Between 1903 and 1918 over 1,300 vans were constructed to this diagram by the Caledonian and private builders. Originally built with a roof door, batches from 1907 incorporated end ventilators. During WW1 some were converted to carry cordite paste, used in the manufacture of munitions. Several were later sold to private owner use.[1]

2080 was built at the St Rollox works of the Caledonian Railway, Glasgow in 1910. It was taken on by the LMS at Grouping in 1923, and renumbered 302080. It was later sold to Cadbury’s, which operated an extensive internal railway system at Bourneville, where it was an internal user vehicle numbered 278.

278 was donated to the SVR by Cadbury’s in June 1967 along with sister vans 266 (304543), 268 (300682) and 269 (307455). It was first numbered 'CR 2080' in Caledonian Railway livery and later it was painted into LMSR livery as 302080.[2] By 2009 it was stored at Kidderminster Railway Museum, where it is seen in this image. With 304543 it left the SVR in May 2016 for a new home on Caledonian metals at Ferryhill Railway Heritage Trust, Aberdeen.[3]

In 2024 Rapido Trains announced a commercial OO gauge model of the Caledonian Railway Dia.67 Goods Van. Two liveries are being produced of 302080, Caledonian Railway 2080[4] and Cadbury 278[5].
