Preservation
40841 was acquired in 1990, arriving on the SVR from Cardiff on 6 March 1991.[4] Considerable restoration was required including replacement of a missing centre side section; before this could be undertaken the wagon appeared in a 1940s event with the words 'Bomb damage' chalked on the side.[5]
Restoration began at Bewdley in late 1995 and was completed in mid-1996. The work included repairs to the chassis, complete body renewal, replacement buffer/drawbar and carrying springs. The body sides, ends, doors and new supports for the missing centre side section required 440 new rivets. Finally the wagon was repainted in 1890s livery. During restoration, it came to light that all the internal longitudinals were second hand, being stamped with the numbers of different vehicles, possibly broad gauge stock which was being scrapped at the time 40841 was built.[5]
40841 is owned by The GWR 813 Preservation Fund. It is operational and is sometimes used in the Demonstration Goods Train.
