I see the job title has recently been changed on this page. Before either also changing it on the many other pages that use 'signalman', or undoing the edit on this page, I think we ought to establish a sort style guide for this wiki. Personally, I'd prefer to stick with 'signalman' on the SVR and leave 'signaller' just for the reference to Saltley. It's the title used by the GWR and BR, and I believe it's used by the current SVR signalling departments, both S&T and signalman training. --[[User:Graham Phillips 110|Graham Phillips 110]] ([[User talk:Graham Phillips 110|talk]]) 10:08, 26 November 2021 (UTC)

How is it used in practice? Is it similar to token working, with both signalmen having to act in tandem and communicating using bell codes?

Yes, both those things are true. The main differences in how it's used are: there are no tokens; the signalmen accept trains by pulling the acceptance lever (one of the levers in the lever frame), and if the line is clear that releases the section signal at the other box. Another difference is that the line has to be fully track-circuited to ensure it is clear. --WillSalt (talk) 16:54, 25 January 2015 (UTC)

Signalman or Signaller

I see the job title has recently been changed on this page. Before either also changing it on the many other pages that use 'signalman', or undoing the edit on this page, I think we ought to establish a sort style guide for this wiki. Personally, I'd prefer to stick with 'signalman' on the SVRSevern Valley Railway and leave 'signaller' just for the reference to Saltley. It's the title used by the GWRGreat Western Railway and BRBritish Rail or British Railways, and I believe it's used by the current SVRSevern Valley Railway signalling departments, both S&TSignals & Telegraph and signalman training. --Graham Phillips 110 (talk) 10:08, 26 November 2021 (UTC)
