Rolling stock

It is reported to own the below.

  • Resident autotrailers 178 and 238.[1]
  • Former resident GWR 1450
  • Ex-GWR 'Small Prairie' 5538. Although never having been on SVR metals during preservation, it is of historical interest as it was allocated to Kidderminster Shed around 1943 and to Shrewsbury in 1961.[2][3] It was photographed working on the Severn Valley line in 1957.
5538 was donated to the town of Barry by Dai Woodham of Woodham Brothers Ltd. It left the scrapyard in 1987, spending 10 years on a plinth on the seafront.[4] It was then relocated to the Vale of Glamorgan Railway in 1997 where it spent some years in storage, effectively as the eleventh member of the "Barry 10". It was then acquired for restoration by the Llangollen Railway Great Western Locomotive Group. It had a cracked cylinder and other problems, as a result of which an exchange of frames was agreed with the owners of sister locomotive 5532 which had left Barry in April 1981, having been purchased for the Dean Forest Railway. 5538 moved to the DFR in July 2006 where despite its problems it was still seen as a candidate for long term restoration, and to the Flour Mill workshops circa 2010[5][6]. The Flour Mill's website says they have installed new cylinders at the front end and replaced the frames at the back end. They were preparing the horns and axleboxes so that the chassis can be re-wheeled. Work has been largely completed on the frames, and the boiler is receiving a new front barrel section, tubeplate and smokebox.[7]
Work is suspended on 5538 while 1450 is overhauled.

From this week's featured article
"76738" is a London and North Western Railway Company 10-ton Goods Van, although it carries a fictitious number as its true identity is unknown. After restoration it saw limited use in the SVRSevern Valley Railway's demonstration goods train, but due to its age and wooden underframe it is now in static use as a sales coach at Bridgnorth. For 101 years between 1862 and 1963, the Severn Valley Railway formed part of the national railway network, running for 40 miles between Hartlebury and Shrewsbury. Established as a separate company, it was mainly operated by the Great Western Railway (GWRGreat Western Railway) and later by British Railways (BRBritish Rail or British Railways).

The present day Severn Valley Railway (SVRSevern Valley Railway) was established in 1965 to preserve part of the line as a heritage railway. Today it has six stations and two halts and runs for 16 miles along the Severn Valley between Bridgnorth in Shropshire and Kidderminster in Worcestershire, following the course of the River Severn for much of its route. Operations involve a mixture of steam and heritage diesel-hauled services.
