While operated by Virgin Trains, 47828 was named at a ceremony at Kidderminster on 28 April 2001 during the 2001 Diesel Gala.<ref>SVR News 136</ref> The full name was displayed as Severn Valley Railway Kidderminster Bewdley Bridgnorth, the longest name carried by any Class 47.<ref>[http://www.class47.co.uk/c47_names.php?s_name=311&index=S Class 47.co.uk]</ref>
The name was removed on 31 January 2005 <ref>[http://www.railuk.info/diesel/getloco.php?id=3843 railuk.info Class 47/4 47828]</ref>, with one of the nameplates being put on display inside the [[Head Office|SVR offices at Comberton Place]]. Shortly afterwards, while being operated by Cotswold Rail, 47828 was renamed ‘Joe Strummer’. It migrated to the Direct Rail Services Class 47 fleet before preservation by [[BR Class 37 37688 Great Rocks#37688 in preservation|D05 Preservation Ltd]].
