The SVR can call on a working fleet of approximately 8 steam locomotives, 4 diesel locomotives, a 5 car (3+2) DMU, 65 carriages and several goods wagons.
There are several more locomotives, both steam and diesel currently undergoing long term repair.
The carriages are normally operated as five rakes of 7 or 8 carriages; one rake each of BR maroon (set M), GWR chocolate & cream (set G), BR crimson & cream (set C), LNER teak (set N) and LMS maroon (set L), plus a five carriage GWR chocolate & cream diner set (set S). The letters shown are used to identify the sets in working timetables etc.
A number of the goods wagons are used for demonstration freight trains, while others are used by the Permanent Way and Signals & Telegraph Departments for carrying rails, ballast and other materials.
