43106 was the last of a batch of 37 built by BR at the former LNER Darlington North Road Works.  The locomotive entered service at South Lynn, Norfolk in April 1951 where it remained for 5 years. Along with many others of the type it was extensively used on stopping passenger and freight services and occasional express passenger trains (the "Leicesters") on the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway. Much of this system was single track with passing loops and the locomotive carried Whitaker token exchange apparatus fitted into a "pocket" towards the front of the tender.
