Goods Wagons

One of only two vehicles built to Diagram G39 in 1939, the Telegraph Code 'LoriotGWR telegraphic code signifying a machine truck Y' denotes them as 25 ton machinery trucks with a 20' well. Built just before the Second World War, they were used for transporting the company bulldozers which no doubt saw much use during the wartime bombing.

The wagon ended its BRBritish Rail or British Railways service at Radyr and was moved to Bescot in 1994, from where it was saved on the day of being dispatched for scrapping by the intervention of a group of interested railwaymen. This allowed negotiations for its sale into preservation to take place, with 41990 arriving at Bewdley in September 1994.[1] Shortly after arrival it received a welding repair to one headstockThe underframe member across each end of a wagon carrying the buffers and coupling. Known as the Bufferbeam on a locomotive. and a repaint.[2]

41990 is owned by The GWR 813 Preservation Fund, and has been used to carry locomotive boilers and frames as well as P.W.Permanent Way materials.

The sister vehicle to 41990, 41989, featured in the 1953 film "The Titfield Thunderbolt".[3][4] It was subsequently scrapped[1], leaving 41990 as the only surviving LoriotGWR telegraphic code signifying a machine truck Y.[5]
