107291 was built at Swindon in 1935 to Diagram J 21, Lot 1169.[1] It is a ‘MACAW B’ 45 foot 30 ton Bogie Bolster wagon. Bolsters are the raised wooden baulks on which the load was carried; often these had movable stakes at the ends of each bolster to prevent the load sliding off the side of the wagon. The wagon was fitted with two bogies, each with 4 wheels.

107291 was acquired by The Great Western (SVR) Assoc. in 1971 from the Round Oak Steel Works, Brierley Hill, arriving on 22 March in that year. It was quickly restored for use in service as a P.W.Permanent Way vehicle, that use being interrupted by a brief spell as a mock ‘Pullman’ carriage for filming in 1975.[2]

In 1985, 107291 appeared on the main line when it was used in the GW 150 demonstration freight train which ran to Newport behind GWR freight loco 2857.[3] It was completely re-decked and repainted in 1986, and saw regular use as a transporter of rails, sleepers and point-work on the railway.[2]
