The Society was formed to operate the Coalyard Miniature Railway from 1988.

The Coalyard Miniature Railway Model Engineering Society is an affiliated body of the Southern Federation of Model Engineering Societies. The Federation provides its around 240 member clubs and societies with services connected with Health and Safety and represents its members on other committees concerned with model engineering.

Brian Shaw helped start the Coalyard Miniature Railway in 1988, and died 16 May 2017.[1] The Federation shows the Society to have five members.

Thanks to their passengers the Society donates funds to other bodies on the SVRSevern Valley Railway. In 2017 this included the SVR Share Offer for Bridgnorth Station, Severn Valley Railway Charitable Trust Ltd, The Erlestoke Manor Fund, Stanier 8F Locomotive Society, Class 08 diesel fund, GW(SVR)A coach fund, The 4150 Fund and others.[2]
