Carriage type BG (Brake Gangwayed) designates a carriage with a Guard's compartment and other storage space. The carriage has no passenger seating, although a gangway allows passengers to pass through it.
Following the introduction of TOPS in the late 1960s, BR carriages of this class were allocated the TOPS code NAV, denoting:
N: Non-passenger carrying stock
A: Gangwayed brake
V: Vacuum brake
