BR Standard 2MT 78019

78019 crossing Victoria Bridge in 2010

BR Standard 2MT 78019 was resident on the SVR between 1973 and 1998, and was a Gala visitor in spring 2010.

The BR Standard 2MT 2-6-0 was essentially a development of the LMS 2-6-0 ‘Mickey Mouse’, of which the SVR’s 46443 is an example. 78019 was built at BR’s Darlington Works and entered service in 1954 at Kirkby Stephen in Cumbria. The locomotive was eventually with drawn from service in November 1966.

SVR member Mr Charles Newton had already bought 46521 before purchasing 78019 as a longer term restoration project. 78019 arrived by road at Bridgnorth from Barry Scrapyard on Saturday 10 March 1973.[1][note 1]

Some restoration work took place during the following years, but was still not complete when in spring 1998 the Loughborough Standard Locomotive Group Ltd based at the Great Central Railway offered to complete the restoration of the locomotive on agreement that it then remained at the GCR for an undisclosed period of time. The deal, which resulted in joint equal ownership of the locomotive, was agreed and the move completed.

78019 returned to the SVR as a gala visitor in spring 2010.
