The BRBritish Rail or British Railways Standard 2MTThe British Railways system of classifying steam locomotives by power using a number from 0, least powerful, to 9, most powerful, followed by either F for freight, P for Passenger or MT for Mixed Traffic. 2-6-0 was essentially a development of the LMSLondon Midland & Scottish Railway 2-6-0 ‘Mickey Mouse’, of which the SVRSevern Valley Railway’s 46443 is an example. 78019 was built at BRBritish Rail or British Railways’s Darlington Works and entered service in 1954 at Kirkby Stephen in Cumbria. The locomotive was eventually with drawn from service in November 1966.

SVRSevern Valley Railway member Mr Charles Newton had already bought 46521 before purchasing 78019 as a longer term restoration project. 78019 arrived by road at Bridgnorth from Barry Scrapyard on Saturday 10 March 1973.[1][note 1]

Some restoration work took place during the following years, but was still not complete when in 1998 a group from the Great Central Railway at Loughborough offered to complete the restoration of the locomotive on agreement that it then remained at the GCRGreat Central Railway for an undisclosed period of time. This move was completed and became permanent.

78019 returned to the SVRSevern Valley Railway as a gala visitor in spring 2010.
